{mosimage}Just moments before the Pontiff is set to leave Australia, at Sydney International Airport, Australian Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, has announced that Australia has appointed a new Vatican ambassador - Tim Fischer.

9. 53am Now after shaking hands with cardinals and bishops, including Bishop Anthony Fisher O.P., Benedict XVI mounts the stairs and enters the Qantas plane, to head back to Rome.

After a very cold night of sleeping under the stars, the pilgrims awake to the sounds of the choir of the Seminary of the Good Shepherd, leading the pilgrims in Morning prayer.

After flying over the gathered pilgrimsin a helicopter, the Pope, in the Popemobile, drove into the Randwickprecinct and almost at walking pace drove passed the pilgrims.

Several times the motorcade stopped while the Popemobile's window was opened so that the Pontiff could personally bless anumber of small children that were held up to him.

{mosimage}After pilgrims joined the Holy Father in prayer and Adoration at the evening vigil last night, adoration tents around the Randwick precinct were packed with pilgrims continuing their prayer and receiving confession, which was available in many languages.

{mosimage}7pm - The Evening Vigil commences with Sydney Youth Ballet carrying lamps and performing a liturgical dance. The entry of the light reminds us of the Christian call to worship.

Gary Pinto performs 'Behold The Cross' as the WYD Cross & Icon is carried onto the sanctuary and put into position. Just as the young people made their pilgrimage to Randwick today, the presence of the Cross and Icon highlight the culmination of the journey is here.

Pope's Visit Officially Begins

Pope Benedict XVI officially began his visit to Australia this morning, when he paid a visit to Government House. The Pontiff’s motorcade left St Mary’s Cathedral House shortly before 9am for the short drive to Government House.

On arrival the Governor General, Major General Michael Jeffery and Mrs Jeffery greeted him. The Pope inspected the assemble honour guard.
