The University of Sydney (USYD) is the oldest University in Australia. It was established in Sydney in 1850.

Sydney University will host a number of activities during the WYD week including:

• The Papal Plate WYD Soccer Competition;
• The Papal Plate WYD Debating Competition;
• “Bavarian Forever” Party celebrating the arival of Pope Benedict XVI; and
• the UNIVERSITAS International student gathering

Life at Sydney University is both colourful and varied. With a large range of on campus bars, pubs and venues to choose from, there is constantly original entertainment and musical performances.

Sport is also a strong part of university culture with five sports fields, two tennis courts, two indoor sports facilities, a gym and two tennis courts all on the main campus.

University of Sydney is a member of Australia’s Group of Eight universities which means it is one of the top eight universities for research performance in Australia. According to the Times it is ranked 31st in the world for overall performance.

The University of Sydney main campus is located over the two inner-city suburbs of Darlington and Camperdown. It is only a 10 minute walk to both Redfern and Central stations, as well as being a little over half an hour in public transport to Randwick Racecourse.
