Image ECUADOR with Soraya Mora.

Soraya Moya, 34, is originally from Ecuador but she moved to Australia 18 years ago and has been living here ever since.

1.   What's the connection between WYD, Ecuador and you?

I am part of the Scalabrini Group Youth Group [in Sydney] and I'm the coordinator of the groups coming from Ecuador.

I am also involved in various events that the Scalabrini group is organising, such as the Multicultural Event happening on the 13 of July at the Marconi club. I'll be there representing my country Ecuador with our folk dances and the dancing group I direct called "Tierra Mia Ecuador".

2.   How many pilgrims are coming to Sydney from Ecuador?

There are over 100 pilgrims coming from Ecuador.

3.   What are some of the main Dioceses, cities and groups from Ecuador that will be represented at WYD08?

There are two main groups coming from Ecuador one is  "Acción y Vida" from Quito and the Highlands; one from the Saint John the Baptist Parish in Guayaquil and the Coast region; and as well there are other smaller groups from different cities coming.

4.   Will Ecuador be represented in the 'Papal Plate' WYD Soccer Competition?

I was not aware that there was a Papal Plate WYD Soccer Competition, I'm not too sure but it would be great if we are there.

5.   Is Ecuador having a National Gathering at WYD and if so, when and where is it on?

We will be having a Mass on the 5 July to Welcome the Ecuadorian Pilgrims at Saint Therese Church in Mascot this will be officiated by Father Reinaldo Vassoler and everyone is welcome, the mass will be at 7pm and we will have some refreshments afterwards :-} We are also planning together with the Consulate to have an event to welcome all the Ecuadorian pilgrims around the 26 July, still working on it.

6.   Are there any migrants from Ecuador living in Australia? If so, how many?

Yes, there are around 2500 Ecuadorian migrants in the whole of Australia.

7.   Are there any National Foods of interest?

There are lots of traditional food but some of the most traditional ones are:
"Fritada" - fried pork
"Llapingachos" - potato patties filled with cheese and served with chorizo and salad
"Ceviches" - seafood with lemon, onions and tomatoes.

And this is just to name a few!!

8. And any National Past-Times of interest?

Soccer, good food, visiting your neighbours and friends

9.   Describe Ecuador in 3 words.

Absolutely Beautiful, World heritage, Friendly people.

I encourage everyone to visit Ecuador one of the most amazing countries you will see in your life time!!!!  because of its people, culture, food and the country itself. Do I sound Ecuadorian??? :-}  Don't forget the Galapagos Islands!!!!
