1.   What's the connection between WYD, your country and you?

Our country of Canada hosted World Youth Day in 2002.  I also attended World Youth Day in Cologne 2005.  I was ordained a priest in Lebanon in 2006.  My country of origin is Lebanon, my country of citizenship is Canada.  Whenever I see the flag of Lebanon at one of these great gatherings, I feel very moved to go and speak to those young people who probably have sacrificed a lot to be there.  When I see the bright maple leaf of the Canadians, I also feel very happy because Canada is a very welcoming and warm people.

2.   How many pilgrims are coming to Sydney from your country?

I do not have exact numbers, perhaps someone at the office at WYD will know better.  I do know however, that our group is one of the largest groups from Canada.  Thanks to the tenacity of the organizers they overcame countless obstacles.  I also know that there are many smaller groups from Canada going.  I am really hoping that Lebanon will also be sending a group of pilgrims!

3.   What are some of the main Dioceses, cities and groups represented?

The website xt3 has really opened my eyes to the many Canadians going.  It really is a blessing to make contacts and friends even before we arrive in Sydney.

4.   Will your country be represented in the 'Papal Plate' WYD Soccer Competition?

Well, if Lebanon is there, I don’t know why anybody would want to even attempt playing since we are naturally born champions.  Excuse me for being so proud of my Lebanese heritage!!

5.   Is your country having a National Gathering at WYD and if so, when and where is it on?

I am wondering how one would find out about this.  Certainly, it would be wonderful for each member of the national hierarchy to meet specifically with their young people.  I remember in Cologne how the Italian young people met regularly with their bishops.

6.   Are there any migrants from your country living in Australia - if so how many?

The Lebanese are everywhere … what else can I say.

7.   Any National Foods of interest?

Maple syrup from Canada is the most wonderful thing on earth, after of course our beer.

8.   Any National Past-Times of interest?

playing hockey, arguing about hockey and watching hockey

9.   Describe your country in 3 words?

Painfully-polite, welcoming, and cold (temperature that is!)

10. What little souvenirs will your country’s pilgrims bring to WYD to share their nationality with other pilgrims?

Little Canadian flag pins
