The Art Gallery of NSW THE ART GALLERY OF NEW SOUTH WALES
The
Art Gallery of NSW is located in the Domain in Sydney. It is the fourth
largest art gallery in Australia and holds collections of Australian,
Asian and European art. Around forty exhibitions are presented there
every year.
The
Art Gallery of NSW presents several prizes every year including the
Archibald Prize for the best portrait, Wynne prize for best landscape
painting of Australian scenery and the Dobell prize for drawing.
Every year, the Gallery displays ARTEXPRESS, which showcases the best works created by the Higher
School Certificate Visual Arts students.
The
building was designed by Walter Liberty Vernon, a NSW Government
Architect, at the end of the nineteenth century. There was an addition
to the building in 1971, which more than doubled the exhibition space.
In 1988, the Captain Cook Bicentenary Wing was completed.
The
Art Gallery of NSW will feature in the World Youth Day Stations of the
Cross on Friday 18 July. The Gallery is the site for the third station
– Jesus before the Sanhedrin, however this will not be a public venue.
The Art Gallery of NSW is currently hosting an international festival of contemporary art, Biennale of Sydney , from 18 June - 7 September.
