BARANGAROO

Barangaroo is a harbourfront park located at the western edge of Sydney’s CBD, along Hickson Road, which is hosting several WYD events.

The events at Barangaroo include:
- The WYD Opening Mass on Tuesday, July 15

- Arrival of Pope Benedict XVI on Thursday, July 17

- Several of the Stations of the Cross on Friday, July 18

As well as these main events, there will be two main stages which will host many Youth Festival Performances during the week of WYD08.

The site covers 22 hectares and includes 1.4km of foreshore. Formerly known as “East Darling Harbour”, the site was renamed in 2006 following a statewide naming competition.

Harbourside workers named the site the “Hungry Mile” during the Great Depression, as they would walk from wharf to wharf in search of employment, often with little success.

While it was once a functioning port, Barangaroo is no longer sustainable as a modern port, as there is no direct access to freight rail and modern ships require more space.

Barangaroo will be one of the busiest locations for World Youth Day events, and there are 100 builders on site everyday to ensure it is ready in time.

Baranagaroo can accommodate up to 150,000 people at any one time.
