The Great Australian BBQ
THE BARBECUE (BBQ)

With Australia’s lovely climate & sunny weather, the Aussie barbecue (BBQ) has been a way of life for almost every Australian.

The Aussie BBQ has always served us well whether in the backyard at the park or by the pool.

There are many types of barbecue used in Australia such as the gas bbq, webber hot coal (the Aussie favorite) or wood fired barbecue. All of which are designed to produce huge wads of perfectly flavoured meat. The preferred meat’s in Australia are lamb, veal, beef steak and (of course) sausages, with just a little (or a lot) of onion on the side.

How is it part of our culture?

Men almost always do the cooking at the barbecue and are accompanied by other men and their ice cold beers. All the while the ladies are mixing up the salads and buttering the bread to go with the meat. The salads may include potato, pasta or Aussie coleslaw. Sliced potatoes, mushrooms and onion cooked in butter are also sizzling favourites on the Aussie barbecue.

So when the pilgrims arrive we can only hope they are met with the irresistible smell of slowly sizzling meat and onion on an old (or new) webber. We also hope they will be quickly passed an ice cold drink and enjoy the heat (in comparison to a London winter) that Sydney is sure to provide.

The WYD Big Aussie BBQ

The colloquially termed 'WYD Big Aussie BBQ' will take place in over 200 locations across Sydney on Wednesday 16 July after the Catechesis. At lunch-time on this day, WYD will host an iconic traditional barbeque for all pilgrims.

Tip Top will supply 220,000 slices of bread for the event and Top Cut will supply an equal amount of sausages to go with the bread.

Community service organization, Rotary Australia has offered its support to help host the 'WYD Big Aussie BBQ,' together with parishes and Church community groups across greater Sydney.
