Close proximity: Hyde Park & St Mary's Cathedral
HYDE PARK

Hyde Park is situated across the road from St Mary's Cathedral in Central Sydney and was named in 1810 by Governor Macquarie after Hyde Park in London. During the 19th Century the area was used for sports such as cricket, racing and boxing before being required for construction within the CBD at the beginning of the 20th Century.

Once the construction was completed, Hyde Park was redesigned as an inner city park. Current features of Hyde Park include the huge playable chess set, the avenue of figs and a War Memorial for Australian Soldiers who fell in the First World War.

What will Hyde Park be like during WYD?

During WYD08,  Hyde Park will be full of activity. Not only is there a WYD merchandise store and Jesus Walks art exhibition open all week, other events will be happening each afternoon and evening. Every night reconciliation and adoration will be available, in addition from Wednesday night cultural dance concerts will be held. More than 20 countries will be present and performing their cultural dances.

Veneration of the World Youth Day Cross and Icon, which has just finished travelling around Australia, and is currently heading to Sydeny, will also be happening until till Thursday night of the week of WYD.

Hyde Park is a short walk from St James or Museum Train Station at which every train on the city circle stops.
