Dawn Eden will be talking at WYD. Refrain from pre-marital sex so you can focus on developing
solid, loving relationships is the message from Dawn Eden, 39, who used to live
a Sex And The City lifestyle as a
former music journalist and copy editor at The
New York Post.
Eden tells of her extraordinary journey
in her book, The Thrill of the Chaste: Finding Fulfillment While Keeping
Your Clothes On.
She converted from Judaism and agnosticism to Catholicism in
1999, and later became chaste in 2003. Eden says on her website that before
she converted, she had believed sex would push her relationships forward
towards marriage, but instead she got transient physical pleasure without
lasting joy.
At 27, she hit a turning point when
she read a novel, The Man Who Was Thursday, by G.K. Chesterton, which makes
the case that the only true kind of rebellion is the Christian rebellion of
truth and beauty against the forces of chaos and destruction.
Eden says
being chaste helped her to focus on improving all her relationships, even as a
daughter and friend.
Her personal odyssey included giving
up some of the behaviours that her "do your own thing" therapist had
told her would help, but just made things worse. "In The Thrill of the
Chaste, I describe this vicious cycle, where single women feel lonely
because they are not loved, so they have casual sex with men who do not love
them," Eden writes.
As a tip, if you find yourself faced with sexual temptation,
she recommends saying the Miraculous Medal prayer:
"O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee."
Dawn Eden will speak on two occasions during the week of WYD:
