WYD Founder: Pope John Paul II At a special pre-WYD performance in Surry Hills of The Jeweller’s Shop, being held to launch CARNIVALE CHRISTI on Saturday, early WYD pilgrims will also see a life size flower statue of Pope John Paul II (as pictured) to mark the occasion.
Carnivale Christi 2008 - the WYD International Young Adult Festival - will consist of three events to be held at St Peter’s Surry Hills the weekend before WYD and then six events to be held at Sydney University during the week of WYD.
“Pope John Paul II founded World Youth Day, so we want to highlight that, while simultaneously celebrating the arrival of Pope Benedict XVI on his first Papal Tour to Sydney,” says Anthony McCarthy the national coordinator of TOWARDS2008.
“Pope John Paul II was a huge inspiration to a lot of people, and to recognise that, hence the theme of the Carnivale Christi to be held throughout WYD will be 'Remembering John Paul - Welcoming Benedict!'" he continues.
The Jeweller’s Shop, a deeply moving play about human love and marriage written by Pope John Paul II whilst he was still a young priest, will launch the festival on Saturday July 12, at 8pm at St Peter’s Surry Hills.
“The play demonstrates Pope John Paul’s profound understanding of human love which he learnt through his experiences with young people through confession and marriage preparation,” Anthony elaborates.
The following day “as Pope Benedict flies into Sydney”, on Sunday July 13 at 3pm, Handel’s Messiah will be performed by a professional orchestra and choir of 40 also to be held at St Peter’s Surry Hills.
“It’s a very special time for me to be involved this year during WYD,” says Danny Madigan, who has been involved in previous performances including Joseph (2007) and Man Born to be King (2000).
“One of the most famous choruses is ‘for unto us a child is born’ – and my wife is actually expecting on Sunday [when we’re performing],” he says.
“So we’ll be welcoming the Pope and could be welcoming our new baby at the same time,” he says in anticipation of the eagerly expected arrivals.
Overnight Adoration will also be apart of this weekend’s prelude events from 10pm-10am at St Peter’s Surry Hills, during which time the Icon Sedes Sapiantiae that Pope John Paul gave to the university students of the world, will be present for veneration.
Other events that will be held as part of Carnivale Christi include the ‘Papal Plate’ international soccer and debating competitions, to be held at Sydney Uni during the week of WYD.
