All you need: Phone, Camera, Laptop & Rosary beads During WYD eBenedict.org will be reporting live on the ground from WYDin Sydney for readers in Sydney and for our readers around the worldwho have not been able to make the journey.
With full media accreditation entitling us to access to media facilities, both as pilgrims and journalists we will bring you the feel and emotion from various locations and events throughout Sydney.
"It is our hope that we can get behind the immediate story to give a young Catholic's perspective on what is really going on in a timely manner," says Bridget Spinks, 23, a Sydney Catholic who is going to WYD with Towards2008 and managing the site as well.
"We have just introduced the new eBenedict.org 'WYD Live Blog,' which went live earlier this week, and is already a place where breaking news and updates are posted on what is going on at WYD," she continues.
Recent advances in technology has led to an emerging reporting method referred to as 'Live Blogging,' she says. Recent events such the Pope's arrival in the US made use of live blogging.
A reporter equipped with a camera, and phone and maybe a laptop can now post stories directly to the web in real time.
Wireless internet and internet enabled phones have also been key factors enabling Live Blogs, making reporting possible from events such as the Evening Vigil 'under the stars,or the Arrival of the Pope at Barangaroo on Sydney Harbour.
"The mainstream media will report the obvious events and stories, probably in their usual way, but we aim to be different," said Justin Lynch, an online reporter who is keen to discover the Catholic voice in a story and a pilgrim and use the new technology to do it.
"St Paul and many other saints used the latest technology in their day to spread the good news and we hope to follow in their steps," he says, inspired by Christ's followers.
"Come WYD, most of our audience will not be in Sydney and we want to help them feel part of this special event via the internet. We want them to feel part of the entire Catholic family from all around the world," he says.
eBenedict.org reporters have already been out and about, recently reposting on early Pilgrim arrivals in Sydney and Brisbane which you can see here.
Live Blogging will also mean that there will be more frequent news updates to the eBenedict.org with news of greater variety.
"So send us your story tips and leads during WYD to let the world know what is really going on," Bridget says.
