Bulls Game on: September 6
With the new cricket season set to get under way next weekend, the Papal Bulls Sports Club in Sydney will need a minor miracle to fill its 11 for the first match against St Luke’s Anglican Church next Saturday, September 6.

“This will be our tenth season representing the Catholic Church in the Church’s Cricket Competition,” explains Deacon James McCarthy a founding member of the Club and a left arm fast bowler.

“But with a few players moving out of Sydney after last season, we still haven’t got a full squad for next week – so we’re putting out a call for anyone who wants a game.”

Deacon James will himself only be able to play the first game of the season before he returns to Rome to continue his Priestly Studies at the North American College.

In his “Farewell Game” Deacon James will lead the team out as captain, a role he also filled throughout last season.

The Papal Bulls Sports Club was established in 1999 and began representing St Michael’s Belfield Catholic Church in the NSW Churches Cricket Competition.  In its first season (1999/2000) the Papal Bulls won the premiership in C Grade going through the Season undefeated under the captaincy of the Club President, Anthony Gordon.

The following season that team was elevated to B Grade and from Season 2001/02 a second team began playing in C Grade, captained by Anthony McCarthy.  This team ultimately went on to win its first premiership in Season 2004/05.

Over the past ten years, other team captains have included Nat Smith, John McCaughan, Alex Bova and Anthony Kendrick.

Since Season 2006/07, the Papal Bulls have also represented St Peter’s Catholic Church, Surry Hills and the Club is now officially registered in the Churches’ Competition as St Michael’s / St Peter’s.

The Papal Bulls Sports Club also coordinates other sporting fixtures including the annual Cardinal’s Cup Touch Football Competition played on Rugby League Grand Final Day, which was won last year by the Notre Dame Rugby Club.
